Providence Pedestrian Bridge
Providence, RI — 2009

This design reimagines a pedestrian bridge as a living system, where native plantings root into the structure itself and invite biodiversity to reclaim a place along the urban shoreline.

The granite piers will host saltwater marsh grasses, becoming the “green feet” of this sustainable structure. On the east bank a sizable spartina wetland will encourage biodiversity and habitat restoration. The structure of the bridge is informed by regional marine fabrication technology. As in a boat hull, a central torsion box and peripheral ribs makes sinuous geometry possible while providing strength and efficiency.

Section Perspective

The Providence River Pedestrian Bridge offers a new link between neighborhoods and a place for gathering and play. As many as a thousand people will sit on the bridge amphitheater to watch a concert against the skyline of Providence. The bridge is a flexible, seamless extension of the new riverfront parks. Two twelve-foot wide levels, an upper and lower, ensure safe circulation for bikers, runners, walkers and strollers. Adjacent zones create an overlook and spaces for relaxation and gathering.
