Expanding the building’s capacity for art, programming, and community events, the renovation at Pioneer Works creates a fully accessible environment that builds upon its industrial history.
Pioneer Works, an artist-founded cultural center in Brooklyn, occupies an ironworks building from 1866. We led the design for Phase 2 of its renovation, making it fully accessible while preserving its industrial character.
Our primary challenge was adapting the historic industrial building to meet modern accessibility standards while preserving its cherished industrial character. The client was also firmly committed to keeping the original aesthetic of exposed structural timber, blackened steel, and glass. This meant every modification had to blend seamlessly into the existing aesthetic. Ensuring accessibility stayed at the forefront of the design demanded careful planning because of the historical nature of the building.

The design includes new cantilevered spaces that fill a three-story void and provide more exhibition and performance space. Railings throughout the triple-height area and reconstructed floors meet accessibility standards. An elevator shaft connects all levels, including the future roof deck and observatory. All modifications blend with the building’s character and preserve its original aesthetic.
Through close collaboration with a client with a distinct vision, we designed solutions that honored the original building while making the space accessible to all.
Our renovation of Pioneer Works improves accessibility through new mezzanines, an elevator, and reconstructed floors while seamlessly integrating modern infrastructure like climate control. These changes made the space comfortable, compliant, and ready for larger community events and future development, such as a planned observatory on the roof.
