Our plan for Fordham Plaza transforms a major Bronx transit hub into a vibrant public space, blending walkability, green infrastructure, and economic opportunity at the heart of the borough.

In addition to an improved entrance to the below-grade commuter rail station, the conceptual design study proposes several retail kiosks, cafes and a greenmarket to help animate the public space while financially supporting the maintenance and programming efforts of a new not-for-profit organization that will manage the Plaza. The study introduces new environmental elements such as wind turbines, solar panels and stormwater swales, and maximizes the amount of new green space, creating a verdant gateway to this vibrant Bronx plaza.

Located on a bridge structure above a Metro-North Railroad station, Fordham Plaza has long been known as a major transportation hub and transit interchange; twelve bus routes, Bus Rapid Transit and commuter rail all converge at Fordham Plaza, one of the busiest pedestrian corridors in New York City. The conceptual design study proposes a major realignment of the road network - including conversion of one street to transit-only use – that will reduce traffic congestion and simultaneously create a contiguous and pedestrian-friendly public space with greater opportunities for plantings and event programming.
