One of New York City’s original public markets, La Marqueta, was established in 1936 in East Harlem, which hosted 300 merchants at its peak. After several decades of decline, the City commissioned WXY to undertake stakeholder engagement process and a feasibility study to develop a framework for future investments at La Marqueta.
WXY’s feasibility analysis and planning process—which reimagines the entire site situated under the MetroNorth rail line along Park Avenue—led to a host of design recommendation to match physical spaces with appropriate programming and activities.
A new public indoor market will feature fresh produce and prepared food options. Outdoor lots will become home to additional farmer’s market vendors and recreational space, while new retail opportunities are located closest to a robust pedestrian corridor. Food incubator spaces will be tucked into existing buildings, while a garden center will be relocated on a site with higher vertical clearance to allow for more sunlight and growing space.
